Student Holiday on Monday, October 11. Teachers have Staff Development.
LA 1-2
Students in my first and second period class are reading the novel, A Long Way from Chicago by Richard Peck. Joey and Mary Alice spend a week with their unusual grandmother every summer between 1929 and 1935. We are reading some in class, but assignments for outside reading will be given, also. Students in this class should have read through page 59 by next Wednesday, October 13. When we have completed the book, students will take the AR test. I will have additional updates later.
LA 3-4
Students in my third and fourth period are reading a novel Run Away Home by Patricia McKissack. This story is set in southern Alabama during the late 1880's. Characters include a black family and an Apache Indian who have to overcome many hardships during the post-Civil War era. We will read some in class, but students are to read through page 71 by next Wednesday, October 13.
We will compare the events in this novel with the events in the novel Journey to Jo'burg by Beverely Naidoo, a story set in South Africa during the 1980's.
LA 7-8 Pre-AP
Yesterday students received a new novel, Dragon of the Lost Sea by Laurence Yep. I am not assigning a Dialectical Journal for this novel--great cheers erupted when I announced this fact! We read Chapters one and two in class. Homework assignment is to read Chapter three. I gave some class time for reading.
Today's assignment: Students should have read through page 91 by Wednesday, October 13.
