LA 1 and LA 7
Next week students will be taking Semester Exams on Tuesday and Wednesday (Dec. 16 & 17). The grades for these tests appear on the Report Card and count one-seventh of the semester grade so it is important for students to do well on them.
Since students come to me two class periods, we will meet both days.
Tuesday students will take the Reading portion of the Semester Exam .
This will consist of reading two short selections from the Literature textbook, and then answering some multiple choice questions about the selections. I have chosen "Shoes for Hector" on pages 231 to 235 and "Eleven" on pages 239 to 242 for this part of the test. I do not mind if students read these stories before the test, but they must re-read them in class on the day of the test)
Wednesday students will take the Vocabulary portion of the exam
My first and last classes, LA 1 and LA 7, will be taking the test for Unit 7--barrier, calculate, compose, considerable, deputy, industrious, jolt, loot, rejoice, reliable, senseless, shrivel.
The test consists of 50 multiple choice items. Students will choose the correct word to complete each sentence. Most of the sentences were taken from those students have written for me in class, with just a bit of polishing by me.
I have printed a copy of this for each student so everyone will be aware of the importance of studying for these tests.
Thank you for your support.

Wednesday students will take the Vocabulary portion of the exam
The Vocabulary test for Pre-AP students will consist of words from the first six units of the Vocabulary Workshop packets (120 words in all). As soon as I have completed the test, I will give students a list of words to focus on while studying for this exam. I am not concerned with synonyms, antonyms, or which syllable has the most stress for this exam. I want students to be able to use these words when writing and understand the meaning when found in a reading selection. I am, therefore, going to attempt to come up with sentences containing these words. I plan to use a multiple choice and/or matching format and will probably have between 50 and 100 questions.
I have printed a copy of this for each student so everyone will be aware of the importance of studying for these tests.
Thank you for your support.
