Pre-AP update

September 1, 2004

Dear Parents and Students,

This letter is a notice to parents and students in my 6th Grade Pre-AP Language Arts classes of some changes being implemented this First Six Weeks.

1. Our school is experiencing difficulty getting the new Accelerated Reader tests up and running. Our computer expert is on maternity leave, and we are not sure if anyone else if familiar with the AR program. Due to this problem, students will NOT BE REQUIRED to have a certain number of AR points this First Six Weeks. I will send another notice when the program is up and running.

2. I have decided to use the Sadlier-Oxford Vocabulary Workshop as our main vocabulary resource. The Language Arts teachers at the high school have requested this series in order to familiarize students with vocabulary frequently found on standardized tests and college entry exams. We will spend approximately two (2) weeks on each unit. A test will be given at the end of each unit. Students will keep the current unit in their Homework Folder. When completed, the unit will be moved to the Language Arts Notebook, and the new unit will be placed in the Homework Folder. All words are subject to Semester Exam questions.

Sadlier Oxford Vocabulary Workshop: Level A, Unit One Assignments:

Wednesday, September 1: we will discuss all the words that are nouns: misgiving, oaf, repast For homework, students should look over which syllable is stressed, part of speech, definition, synonyms, antonyms, and sentence completion.

Thursday, September 2: verbs: besiege, denounce, douse, forsake, irk, recede

Friday, September 3: adjectives: famished, gainful, immense, inept, ingenious, instantaneous

Tuesday, September 7: adverb: expressly and more than one part of speech: apparel (n,v), compress (v,n), dispatch (v,n), libel (n,v)

Wednesday and Thursday: review all words

Friday, September 10: Vocabulary Test
