ALL CLASSES
We continue to record daily quotes, proverbs and alliteration on our note cards. My hope is that students add some of these to their writing to ‘spice up’ the story.
Quote #2 “Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.” Joseph Addison
Quote #3 “You can’t win unless you know how to lose.” Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
Quote #4 “You cannot shake hands with a clenched fist.” Indira Gandhi
Proverb #2 “Everyone must row with the oars he has.” English Proverb
Proverb #3 “When spider webs unite, they can tie up a lion.” Ethiopian Proverb
Proverbs #4 “If you have much, give your wealth. If you have little, give your heart.”
Arab Proverb
Alliteration #2 “Bertha Bartholomew blew big, blue bubbles.”
Alliteration #3 “Clever Clifford Clutter clumsily closed the closet clasps.”
Alliteration #4 “Dwayne Dwiddle drew a drawing of dreaded Dracula.”
Yesterday, I read Anamalia, an alphabet book of Alliterations, by Graeme Base to each class. Each student then wrote an example of Alliteration using his or her name. Some of them are precious. Students wrote their sentences on a poster that I will post in the cafeteria. Check it out when you drop by school.
LA 1 and LA 7
Read Literature textbook page116 to 118 “from Brother Wolf” by Jim Brandenburg. This is a letter written to humans from a wolf’s point of view.
I am reading the novel “Run Away Home....and be free” by Patricia C. McKissack to both classes. Students will be responsible for taking the AR test on this book so when a student is absent, he or she needs to check out a book to read the missed sections.
LA 4
We will complete a Venn Diagram comparing likenesses and differences of the two books we have read so far, Journey to Jo’Burg and Run Away Home.

LA 4
I finally handed out the Vocabulary Words for Unit 3. Students need to focus on the first five words: barrage, bigot, designate, diversity, enigma. Focus on studying which syllable has the most stress, the part of speech, the definition, and how to use the word in a sentence.
Students should have completed Run Away Homeand taken the AR test. I will be running a report tomorrow.

All Classes
We are creating cards filled with Cousins of Similes.
Blue = Daily Quote. No need to memorize. Hope to use in future writing: first quote = "Like a ten-speed bike, most of us have gears we do not use." Charles Schulz
Red = Alliteration Tongue Twisters A to Z . Extra points if memorize and say to me in a couple of days. first example = "Angela Abigail Applewhite ate anchovies and artichokes."
Pencil = Proverbs = "One good turn deserves another."
New quote to be memorized by Friday: "The color of the skin is in no way connected with strength of mind or intellectual powers." Benjamin Banneker (1731 to 1806)
Every Tuesday is Library Day. Students should be reading every night. AR points are needed EVERY six weeks.
I always tell my students: “The more we read, the more we know. The more we know, the smarter we are. The smarter we are, the better our teachers look—I mean the better our chances of success in life!”
