LA 1
Mrs. Lantelme came over and taught a lesson on similes using the book Quick as a Cricket. She showed us how to write a simile and then how to extend it to create a more vivid image for the reader. She drew a picture to show a literal interpretation while having the students tell her what she was really "saying." Students then created their own extended simile and drew a picture to represent the image. We used a Thesaurus to find more interesting adjectives for our similes. It was a fun time for all.
LA 4 and LA 7
I tried to recreate the lesson on similes with these two classes that Mrs. Lantelme. (see above)
LA 1 & LA 7
I am reading the book Run Away Home...and be free to these classes. The Historical Fiction book is set in Alabama in the 1880's. The plot is centered on a black family’s efforts to survive and prosper in the Post Civil War South. They take in Sky, an Apache boy, when he becomes ill with swamp fever after escaping from a train transporting Geronimo and his people to the reservation in Oklahoma.
We will compare the treatment of black Americans in the 1880’s with the treatment of South African blacks in the 1980’s. (Journey to Jo’Burg)
Spelling Test will be next week. I got so caught up in the other lessons that I let the test slip on Friday.
LA 4
Vocabulary Workshop Test will be next week. Continue to read The Cay.

LA 1 and LA 7
Everyone should have a Spelling Book now. This book should be kept at home with the Literature and Language books. We are studying the words in Unit 7 on page 48 compound words. I am not assigning any written work this week. We are learning about the book and the way questions are asked. We will have a test on Friday.
Basic words are: barefoot; sea gull; driftwood; carefree; somebody;
nowhere; haircut; runner-up; teammate; toothbrush;
headache; iceberg; fireproof; uproar; whereas;
dead end; forehead; grandchildren; old-fashioned; nevertheless
Challenge Words: painstaking; water-repellent; ebb tide; self-confident; crestfallen
Thought I had better touch base.
Progress reports will be coming out sometime next week. I will put in a "temporary" grade for the AR tests. This will assist you in determining the importance getting those points. Will update as points are earned.
