ALL CLASSES

NO TESTS TODAY!

I read a book about using adjectives to my students.

Then we used the Thesaurus to find more exciting words to replace some of the adjectives in our stories (yes, this is the SAME story, but it is getting better every day!)

Next we chose a paragraph from the newspaper and tallied the number of times each letter of the alphabet appeared. We will use for discussion purposes and then I will give them to Mrs. Brown for use in Math.

On Thursday, all classes continued editing their stories. We chose one sentence from the story, circled one word and wrote another sentence to extend that idea. We circled a word in the new sentence and wrote another. We circled one word in the third sentence and then stopped. We didn't want to get too far away from the original subject. We were all amazed at how much more interesting this made our stories.

We then paired up to located interesting words beginning with the letters of the alphabet in the newspaper. We held a little competition to see which pair found the most and most interesting words. This had the students wanting to read the stories where the words were located. I hope to see some of these words in their writing.

NO TESTS THIS FRIDAY. We will pick it all up again next week

ALL CLASSES
We completed our D.O.L. in the usual manner. Students wrote the sentences and made corrections on their paper. We discussed the reasons for the corrections. Next we underlined all of the nouns with red pen. We reread the sentences and added adjectives to spice up the meaning.

During Journal Writing time, all students began with the following:

When the substitute said, " ........

Everyone wrote for about ten minutes. I put my story on the overhead, and we located the nouns. Students competed to find the best adjectives to add to the story. We all commented on how much better the story was after using this simple editing technique. Next, they performed this procedure on their own writing.

It was exciting for me to watch their faces as they worked on their stories. We will try some more techniques over the next few days.

ALL CLASSES

My workshop in Victoria was extremely informative. Tomorrow I will see if these ideas work in the real classroom! Watch out, kids, we have work to do!

My substitute encountered a few behavior problems today. A family discussion on the importance of good behavior at all times would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your assistance.

LA 4 & LA 7
We did a "Round Robin" writing activity. One student started a story then it was passed to another student who continued writing the story. It was passed one more time, and then it was passed back to the first student to close out the story. All students shared their stories with the class. It was fun to see where our stories went when we lost control of them.
